Star anise harvest

Star anise is a plant with high economic value. To ensure effective cultivation of star anise, it is necessary to have sustainable farming techniques to both enhance productivity and quality, as well as contribute to the protection and development of star anise forest.

The best time to harvest star anise is March-April, August-September of the solar calendar. When harvesting, people should use hands or hooks to pick each fruit, and limit breaking branches in order not to affect the fruit of the next crop.

By good care and proper technique, star anise can be a high and stable yield, which can last from 20 to 80 years. Cultivation cycle can be up to 90-100 years.

Star anise storage and processing

After harvesting, the fruit should be dried immediately, because it is easy to mold. You can also dip them in boiling water for a few minutes to kill the yeast before drying. With this method, the fruit has a nice red color, but the essential oil content is slightly reduced. Usually, every 100 kg of fresh fruit after drying will give about 25-30 kg of dry fruit.

Star anise is commonly consumed as a dried fruit or an essential oil product. Essential oils can be stored when the fruit is fresh or dried. Star anise essential oil can be distilled using simple, manual distillations, similar to distilling alcohol. The storage time can last from 18-24 hours. For high efficiency and quality of essential oils, it is necessary to use reflux steam continuous distillers with separate boilers.

On the market, star anise products are divided into 3 types:

Type 1 (Aniseed persimmon) fruit with 8 large, uniform petals, not flattened, red-brown color, short stalk (3-5 mm), not moldy. This is the best grade;

Type 2 (Aniseed) fruit has uneven wings, color of cockroach wings, some wings are flattened, crushed, broken;

Type 3 is the fruits that are young, crushed, flattened, dark brown in color. This is of poor quality.

Star anise has high economic value, is used as a spice, medicine, star anise essential oil is also seen a lot in the processing technology of aperitifs, liqueurs, soft drinks and candies. In addition, in traditional medicine, star anise is used as a drug that induces bowel movements, stimulates digestion, cures abdominal pain, relieves pain, reduces contractions in the stomach. In Western medicine, star anise essential oil is considered to have stimulants to enhance intestinal peristalsis, increase secretion of respiratory secretions, help digestion, relieve pain, eliminate phlegm. Star anise essential oil has antibacterial effects, inhibits the growth of tuberculosis bacteria and many other bacteria. Other bacteria should be used as an antiseptic. Star anise is also used in the production and processing of pesticides derived from herbs, killing lice, lice and some external parasites in cattle.

Macadamia Nuts

Macadamia harvest

Usually in Vietnam, in late August to mid-September, the fruit begins to ripen. In the Central Highlands, the harvest season for macadamia nuts is usually between July – September, and mainly August – September.

When you have seen inside the outer skin of the fruit and then you see speckled black dots, the peel begins to crack and gradually falls to the ground, it is time to harvest. You can gather from trees or collect from the ground. Farmers will harvest in a 4-week period, especially when the weather is wet and the pods have exposed cracks. If the harvest is delayed, it will reduce the flavor quality of the seeds.

Preserving macadamia nuts

After harvesting, you need to peel the macadamia nut within 24 hours, do not put it in sealed bags, which can cause fermentation and reduce the quality of the seeds. Farmers will immediately remove the damaged seeds to avoid the spreading to other seeds.

The next step is drying and sorting seeds by size

With high cinnamon forest: 15-20 years after planting, harvest can begin. There are two seasons of cinnamon peeling: spring cinnamon peels in February-March providing the best quality, and autumn cinnamon peels in late July and early August.

Preservation of cinnamon products

After drying, arrange cinnamon bark neatly in boxes or bundles in plastic bags. Do not let the cinnamon bark break, it will reduce the quality of cinnamon. Cinnamon essential oil has the ability to corrode metal, the oil obtained after distillation should be stored in enameled or plastic food containers. The container for essential oils needs to be sealed, a thin layer of water can be placed on top to limit the evaporation of essential oils, and at the same time prevent contact with oxygen in the air. Both dried cinnamon bark and cinnamon essential oil should be stored in a cool, dry place and out of direct sunlight.
