What is the effect of Tamiflu used to treat Corona / Covid19 / nCov / SARS-CoV-2 virus?
According to Decision 125-BYT of the Ministry of Health on guidelines for diagnosis and treatment of nCoV, there is currently no specific treatment for Coronavirus. Current drugs are only used to support symptomatic treatment of diseases caused by Coronavirus such as cough, fever, electrolyte disorders, pneumonia, kidney failure. The basic drugs used are cough suppressants, fever reducers, electrolyte replacement fluid, antibiotics, anti-inflammatory.
The Coronavirus treatment regimen of the Ministry of Health has also classified 5 types of common complications corresponding to each regimen: mild pneumonia; severe pneumonia; acute respiratory distress syndrome; sepsis; septic shock. In these cases, antibiotics will be treated according to severity. This means that Tamiflu is not effective in the treatment of acute respiratory infections caused by nCov. The drug does not work to destroy Coronavirus.
Note when using Tamiflu in Corona virus pandemic
According to the manufacturer’s recommendation approved by the Ministry of Health, the use of Tamiflu for the prevention of nCoV should be case-specific based on the circumstances and requirements; is based on information on characteristics of circulating influenza viruses, on influenza drug susceptibility patterns for each season.
The susceptibility of influenza virus strains to oseltamivir has been shown to vary greatly, so prescribers should update the latest information on influenza virus susceptible samples before deciding whether to use Tamiflu or not. In its post-marketing report, the manufacturer also noted that it has found cases of anaphylactic shock and severe skin reactions including toxic epidermal necrolysis and a polymorphic rash with Tamiflu.
Currently, the drug is only allowed to be used by doctor’s prescription. Using Tamiflu for the wrong purpose will not work, this has happened with seasonal flu in the last months of 2019 when people rushed to buy medicine. And similar to antibiotics, the abuse of Tamiflu will also lead to drug resistance, which is a challenging global health problem.
